Most Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) students are taught the principle that heaven and earth are one, and that people, standing between heaven and earth, are influenced by both. TCM students are taught the Five Phases of Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal that represent movements of energy, and the Six Qi of Wind, Cold, Summer-Heat, Damp, Dry, and Fire which can become pathogenic factors if excessive or untimely.

However, most TCM students are not trained to know how to predict the movements of the heavenly bodies and their consequential effect on the weather (the balance of Six Qi), and their determination of a person’s constitution at birth (the balance of the Five Phases). This is done by referring to the cyclical 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches that the ancient Chinese calendar assigns to each year, month, day, and hour. This is the theory of Wu Yun Liu Qi (五運六氣) or the Five Phases and Six Qi.

Course Objectives

In this live webinar course, students will learn the basic theory of Wu Yun Liu Qi (五運六氣) as described in the classic Huang Di Nei Jing (黃帝內經). Students will become acquainted with the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches and their 60 year cycle. Students will also learn how to apply Wu Yun Liu Qi to direct their treatment protocol. By predicting the predominant Qi over the course of the year, and calculating the patient’s underlying five phase constitution, a practitioner can more effectively bring the patient into harmony with heaven and earth.

This course includes a 1 hour free lecture worth 1 CEU/PDA for live attendees. In this introductory lecture, students will learn how to predict the weather for 2024, to calculate their constitution, and how to help patients stay healthy this year.
